Advocacy & Campaigns

Since 1999, Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights has organized the International Conference on North Korean Human Rights and Refugees in numerous countries around the world. NKHR’s conferences first brought North Korean victims to the world’s attention. When NKHR hosted the first conference in 1999, almost no information about human rights violations in North Korea existed in popular media. No books, no documentaries, and no international networks were yet tackling this issue. Nor was the UN including North Korean human rights abuses in its agenda. NKHR’s conferences told the world about the situation inside North Korea’s closed borders, and most importantly, about North Korea’s political prison camps. Today, the NKHR Conference has evolved into a policy-development platform, engaging civil society, government officials, and representatives of international organizations from around the world.

Thematic Seminars

NKHR organizes seminars for the public, diplomats, and the press on various themes related to North Korea. Past seminars have focused on political prison camps, women’s rights in North Korea, North Korean refugees, North Korean resettlers in South Korea, and the enforced disappearance of South Korean citizens.
