Campaigns & Coalitions

Recognizing that advancing human rights in North Korea depends on expanding solidarity both in South Korea and abroad, NKHR aims to build support for North Korean human rights issues among civil society and governments worldwide. Our international campaigns focus on countries that tend to have a wide influence on other nations or that have shown only limited support for addressing North Korea’s human rights violations. NKHR travels to key countries to build their support for UN resolutions addressing North Korean human rights, improved conditions for North Korean refugees, and prioritization of human rights in the states’ bilateral relations with North Korea. In collaboration with local partner organizations, NKHR places editorials in local media, hosts seminars and discussions with North Korean victims, meets with representatives from government and intergovernmental agencies, and organizes art exhibitions to help raise awareness among the general public. NKHR is an active member of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD), the International Coalition Against Enforced Disappearances (ICAED), and the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network (APRRN). As a member organization of these international organizations, NKHR participates in joint campaigns, programs, conferences, and trainings on global human rights issues such as enforced disappearance and statelessness. In South Korea, NKHR works with other NGOs and civil society to advocate for government policies that advance North Korean human rights and assist North Korean resettlers, North Korean refugees in third countries, and the South Korean victims of enforced disappearance who were abducted to North Korea. Among other activities, NKHR hosts discussions with North Korean victims, organizes marches and demonstrations, joins petitions, and meets directly with government officials on these issues. NKHR also works with volunteers to raise awareness for North Korean human rights issues and to raise money to rescue North Korean refugees.
