Organizer(s) : NKHR and AFAD
Sponsor : NKHR
Day and Time : January 21, 2014, 14:00-17:30
Venue : National Commission for Human Rights, Seoul, South Korea
The Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights (NKHR) and the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD) requests the honor of your presence at the first International Conference on Enforced Disappearances, to be held in Seoul, Korea, on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, 8th floor.
The theme of this conference, Solidarity, Strategies, and Solutions, reflects the high level approach from which the conference will examine the issue of enforced disappearances. The first half of the conference will survey cases from around Asia. The second half will closely examine the UN International Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances and its implications for South Korea, which has yet to ratify the Convention.
As representative of a country that has already ratified the Convention, your attendance would lend invaluable support for a growing issue of transnational scope. Asia submits the highest number of cases to the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. During the UN Commission of Inquiry int#111 the Situation of Human Rights in North Korea, abductions were a key issue at the public hearings in Seoul. These abductions remain largely unresolved and NKHR expects that these outstanding cases will weigh heavily in the final report to be submitted by the Commission in March 2014.
Enclosed please find the agenda for the conference.
